Polaris Post Volume 48
July 2011
---------------------------------------------------------------------

In June, Polaris staff members went to Iwate in turn, to conduct
hearings on what women in the disaster areas need for the Post-
Earthquake Support for Women and Children Project.

According to a recent news report, the police arrested men for having
a woman who survived the earthquake work as a prostitute in Tokyo.
We need to carry on a long-term support.

* US Department of State Released Trafficking in Persons Report
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――

On June 28, 2011, US Department of State Secretary, Hillary Clinton
released the annual Trafficking in Persons Report.

The report ranks countries around the world on their policies against
human trafficking.

For the last eleven years, Japan has been ranked in the second tier--
recognized as one of the countries whose governments do not fully comply
with the the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act's minimum standards.

Polaris believes that raising public awareness is the most important
to combat human trafficking.
Public awareness poses a risk to perpetrators; the society needs
to watch out for human trafficking and to listen to victims.

Polaris Japan will be attending a meeting held by the National
Police Agency on human trafficking in July with other experts
from Japan and abroad.
This fall Polaris Japan is planning an international conference
on human trafficking to lean best practices.

Please help us raise public awareness.
