It'll be a busy summer with the Soccer World Cup and the upcoming
Upper House Election.

South Africa is having a great time with the World Cup, but did you
know that the number of brothels has doubled this year?
With incoming soccer fans who are travelling into the country to
watch the games, there are some concerns about increases in human
trafficking and child prostitution.

* Report by UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons/
US State Department Trafficking in Persons Report Released

―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――

Ms. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on
Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children, officially
visited Japan for investigation in July 2009. She reported on her
Japan visit to the UN Human Rights Council on June 3, 2010.

Her report pointed out some pressing issues in anti- human trafficking
policies in Japan: the importance of increase in awareness raising
among citizens and training for law enforcements; the lack of
shelters specifically serving for human trafficking victims and
the lack of multi-language and multi-cultural services for
victims; and concerns that Japan has not ratified the UN Protocol
on human trafficking.

In addition, the State Department of the United States has been annually
publishing Trafficking in Persons Report since 2001 with the introduction
of "Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000."
Every year, they releases the report to monitor and evaluate the status
of human trafficking and efforts to combat the crime.
This year the tenth report was released on June 14 and for the first
time the report covers the United States.

The report ranks the countries with its efforts to combat human trafficking.
Japan remains in the second tier, as a country with insufficient prevention,
protection, and prosecution.

Shihoko Fujiwara, Polaris Japan's coordinator who was visiting Washington DC,
attended the press conference by the Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton.
