* Saturday, January 9, 2009, 2:00pm-
at Minato-ku Gender Equality Center "Libra"
The eighth in Polaris' monthly seminar series, "How do we stop
commercial sexual exploitation of children?"
"Why did the girls left home to night towns?: From "Pity Victims" to
"Sex Workers as Agencies"

The first seminar of the year 2010 will focus on a following
question: who are the girls and young women working in the
sex industry?

People who migrate from overseas to Japan, especially those who are
engaged in the sex industry, have been regarded as either of the two
opposing images: "victims of human trafficking" or "criminals who
break the immigration law and the anti-prostitution law."
Yet, to many of us, both "victims" and "criminals" seem to vary far
from our daily lives.

On January 9th, we will have Ms Kaoru Aoyama from Kyoto
University. Her field of stury include gender, sexuality, and
immigrant labor. She will introduce examples from her interviews
research and propose a new perspective on global sex industry that
will focus on sex workers as "agents," who is neither "victims" or
"criminals"

By learning the social backgrounds why girls and young women may
engage in sex work, we explore a way to understand our lives might
not be completely separated from their lives.

Please join us in the discussion.

*Please note that the time is different from previous  seminars.
